In The Great Hunt, Lan teaches Rand about Sheathing the Sword. Now a bunch of you have told me that Rand already did this move up in the sky at Falme. However, I truly think Rand will have to use this move to end his life in order to sacrifice himself for others. Think of Lews Therin, the last Dragon. Lews opened his veins to the One Power, killing himself because of the destruction he caused his own family. Who knows who could have died if Lews hadn't commited suicide? Time is cyclical in this ...

This is a great Perrin chapter. I don't have the books on me so I can't pull out the exact passage. Perrin and Faile, Loil, and a few Aiel are traveling in the ways when Perrin smells Trollocs and Myrddraal. A battle ensues which Perrin ends by caving in the face of a Myrddraal. RJ's description of the ruined face was fantastic. If someone could pull that passage, it is one of many awesome Perrin moments in Shadow Rising.

Does anyone else think Rand is going to live? I think Padin Fain is going to throw a monkey wrench into things. He hates both Rand and the Dark One. And for a guy who hasn't done all that much Jordan has kept him somewhat in the picture throughout 11 books. I always looked at him as the Gollum character in the grand scheme of things. Pretty much in the background but plays a major part in the climax of the series. I also think that since Jordan has basically been telling that Rand is going to ...

Many important characters are introduced here: Aviendha, Bair, Chiad, Rhuarc, and Faile. The intro of Aviendha and Nynaeve's required Healing of the Aiel maiden starts Nynaeve's passion and skill for Healing. The intro of Faile, on the other hand, was not as I remembered. Perrin is not taken by her one bit, and even has trouble deciding whether or not she's pretty. As a Hunter for the Horn, Faile is tenacious and almost obnoxious. The fact that she has a good head on her shoulders is obvious ...

It is pointed out several times in the books that women who can channel are able to see others around them glow with Saidar when channeling. They cannot see men do it, only other women. Here is the most recent time Jordan states that Nynaeve cannot see Elayne channel.

Here's another origin for a Jordan element. The Hunt for the Horn of Valere that takes place in Illian is adopted from Norse mythology called the Wild Hunt. The dead would ride great clouds in the sky as they charged forth, creating thunderstorms. What does the Horn of Valere do? It brings back the Hundred Companions, those who have been dead for three thousand years. Here's a Wikipedia article on it:

This chapter contained one of the most memorable moments for me--it must have, it's been about 15 years since I read this book and I still remember it. The crucifiction of the Myrddraal. Jordan's description is supreme here; he even describes the scuff marks on the door left there by the Fade's dying kicks. If anyone needs a reminder as to why you don't mess with Padan Fain, this is it. Imagine the physicality of the whole scene. Fain disarms and seizes the Myrddraal with one hand, and with the ...

This is exactly why Robert Jordan sucks you in. The novel begins with a meeting between darkfriends and Ishamael. Right off the bat we're shown that darkfriends can come from any land or be any social rank. Nobility and perhaps royalty are represented. We're also shown that Ishamael is alive, though horribly wounded. "The man named Bors" is a Questioner for the Children of the Light but I cannot remember if he's important to the story. Does he ever show up again?

The one darkfriend ...

Tam al'Thor's backstory is given in brief. Moiraine speaks to the Amyrlin, Siuan Sanche, concerning Rand's father. Rand is also in attendance in a very formal first meeting with the Amyrlin. Tam earned the title of Blademaster after leaving the Two Rivers as a boy. He joined the army of Illian and fought in a couple of wars, eventually earning the rank of Second Captain of the Companions (whatever they were). So, it's interesting to note that Tam earned the balde, rather than came across it. ...

I was hoping for a little more from one of the Forsaken, but they were just let out (or escaped) from their prison so I can understand how he was killed so quickly. Aginor makes reference to their being an entire race of the Green Men, which is another great nod to a fabled past by RJ.

In looking over this chapter again I notices a striking resemblance to a scene in LoTR: Fellowship. When they are camping on the ways Lan senses a presence following them. This is obviously Mr. Fain. This reminded me of the scene in fellowship where they make camp in the mines and Gollum is following them. This fits perfectly since I have always thought Fain represents the gollum character in the book. Much in the same way Moraine is like Gandolf, and Lan is Aragorn.

Rand, Loial, Hurin, and Selene camp out in Kinslayer’s Dagger. Hurin sees Fain’s fire and Rand and Loial sneak in to retrieve the Horn and the dagger from Shadar Logoth. Rand slays four Trollocs. RJ’s use of descriptive language in order to name the sword forms takes the place of an actual description of the fight. This is a fantastic method for a writer to employ—the poetry of the names for each sword form creates the imagery, not the action itself. I wonder if RJ had any formal martial ...

Selene is so much more interesting to read now, knowing who she is.

BTW, the portal stone world is messed up. Loial iterates the fact that the portal stones place you in worlds that might have been. He then states that the world their in is a world in which the Trollocs have won. This is in fact EXACTLY what the Dark One is trying to do with the Last Battle--transform the world into his own image. One in which man no longer lives.
When doing a re-read, it's easy to point out all the times the characters first do something they make a habit of doing later on in the series-- actions that were once difficult or novel that have become nearly mundane. This chapter marks a pretty momentous occassion as such. For the first time, Rand realizes that the filthy light inside of the void is actually saidin. It's like a baby who first realizes the function of their legs. It was present before but Rand just didn't know what it was. ...

Sanderson cares about it, and all real fans care about it too. You can also sum it up this way: I've been reading the series since 1994, four years after EotW was published. ...

The end of this book is filled with such promise, both from a story standpoint and from a writing standpoint. Jordan has left himself open to a zillion possibilities. As a writer, I wonder how he decided to take the specific path that he took for book two. This is one of the most difficult aspects of writing that I've come to recognize--once you write something, and you believe it to be really good, where do you take it from there? There's a certain fear involved, a fear of potentially ruining ...

Well I started this book over a week ago. Haven't had much time to read, let alone post with recent events, but now I am taking some time for me. I can tell this series is going to be confusing. So I will try to be better at posting. This way you all can tell me what is going on. Firstly, what is the deal with Padden Fain. Is he cured, will he be cured, and if he isn't it seems pretty foolish of Egwene to go visit him. Don't you agree? This lunatic could be feeding off of her. Especially considering ...

I am surprised no one has posted this yet! I can't wait to see what will become of that storyline. I mean we kind of know that it IS going to be delt with in MoL. I am just anxious to see how it will be dealt with. I didn't want to go into detail because I don't want to give away anything critical to Kim. Those of you who have read the whole series know what I mean anyway.

Chapter 43: Decisions and Apparitions

This chapter is monumental to the story. It's Jordan's Fellowship chapter. The characters are gathered in Caemlyn at the Queen's Blessing and finally decide that they need head to the Eye of the World, with Loial's help, to protect the Green Man and prevent the Dark One from using the power of the Eye. More importantly, however, we learn of the Ways in this chapter. The Ways were created by male Aes Sedai and therefore created with tainted saidin. I had forgotten WHY the Ways were evil--I just ...

White Tower

I have a feeling this is going to be anti-climactic. As much as I would love to see a huge battle in Tar Valon, I have a feeling this situation will be resolved somewhat cleanly. Not to say there won't be bloodshed but I have a feeling we aren't going to get the battle that has been hinted at for 3 books. I think with Tarmon Gai'don looming they may reach some sort of agreement. I think it will be that or Tarmon Gai'don will kick off at the white tower which would be amazing.

Who Killed Asmodean

If they ever said who killed him I have since forgotten. I don't think Jordan has said who killed him though. As far as I can remember the only thing we know is that Asmodean knew them.
