So, Balthamel is destroyed by the Green Man--fantastic scene. I was hoping for a little more from one of the Forsaken, but they were just let out (or escaped) from their prison so I can understand how he was killed so quickly. Aginor makes reference to their being an entire race of the Green Men, which is another great nod to a fabled past by RJ.

It's also interesting to learn that the Eye of the World is a pool of the pure essence of saidin (ch. 50). The Aes Sedai who created it--both ...

In looking over this chapter again I notices a striking resemblance to a scene in LoTR: Fellowship. When they are camping on the ways Lan senses a presence following them. This is obviously Mr. Fain. This reminded me of the scene in fellowship where they make camp in the mines and Gollum is following them. This fits perfectly since I have always thought Fain represents the gollum character in the book. Much in the same way Moraine is like Gandolf, and Lan is Aragorn.

The end of this book is filled with such promise, both from a story standpoint and from a writing standpoint. Jordan has left himself open to a zillion possibilities. As a writer, I wonder how he decided to take the specific path that he took for book two. This is one of the most difficult aspects of writing that I've come to recognize--once you write something, and you believe it to be really good, where do you take it from there? There's a certain fear involved, a fear of potentially ruining ...

This chapter is monumental to the story. It's Jordan's Fellowship chapter. The characters are gathered in Caemlyn at the Queen's Blessing and finally decide that they need head to the Eye of the World, with Loial's help, to protect the Green Man and prevent the Dark One from using the power of the Eye. More importantly, however, we learn of the Ways in this chapter. The Ways were created by male Aes Sedai and therefore created with tainted saidin. I had forgotten WHY the Ways were evil--I just ...

It was mentioned earlier as well but when they reach the Green Man he also mentions that Moraine has seen him before. I didn't think much of it at the time but now I want to know what the great need to talk to the green man was the first time. RJ goes to great lengths to establish that in order to find the Green Man there must be a great need to find him. You could assume the great need is to find the Dragon Reborn, so perhaps this first meeting takes place somewhere in the New Spring trilogy. ...

I need to get these books in a PDF file so it's easier to quote. Let me offer the following quote as homage to how incredible Lan is. Damnit, I really have to create a "Lan" category. If you'll remember, Perrin and Egwene are prisoners of Whitecloaks, inside their tent, and Lan and Moiraine come to rescue them. Lan, as usual, uses his stealth and color-shifting cloak to enter the camp unawares:

"Suddenly one of the guards vanished. One minute there were two dim shapes, the ...

Now I am alittle ahead of the game at this part because I over heard Eric and Ryan talking about Rand being a male weilder of the one power (which didn't make sense until now).... so at the end of this chapter, it describes how Mat and Rand escape from Howal Gode. Rand feels his body being picked up and thrown against a wall, apparently the lightening just so happened to strike arround them and their attackers were killed. I read it 3 times and something seems off to me.

Here are my thoughts: ...

One of the interesting creations in EotW are the darkfriends--humans allied to the Dark One in return for riches and power once the world is recast in the Dark One's image after Tarmon Gai'don. The first darkfriend we meet is Howal Gode. Gode is a wealthy man who stops in Four Kings at the inn of the Dancing Cartman. Gode is obviously sent there by an unknown master within the darkfriend heirarchy. What becomes characterstic in this and the succeeding chapters as Mat and Rand march their way ...

Just something I noticed throughout the story, when Perrin is traveling with Egwene and Elyas, he keeps thinking that he wished he was more like Rand with the ladies. This way he didn't sound like an idiot when talking to Egwene. In this chapter Rand and Mat are shown to their rooms by a serving maid at the Queen's Blessing. Rand thinks to himself how pretty she was, and that "she made him wish he had Perrin's way with girls". Just got the connection between the two. This embarrassment ...

One of the best scenes of the novel, by far, is when they are escaping from Baerlon. Here, readers are still scared of Trollocs and, heck, even Myrdraal. Don't get me wrong, Fades are freaky even in book 11 but they lose their fear factor after awhile. Not here baby. Rand, Moiraine, Lan, Perrin, Mat, Nynaeve, Egwene, Thom...what better cast of characters is there?

Lets create the mood. Rand is damn near killed by a Fade in the Stag and Lion. The thing, once it sees Lan come (this is my favorite ...

Skipping ahead a bit to the chapter where Rand has Tam on a litter, bringing him for medical attention. A lot of things in the beginning of EOTW reminded me of Lord of the Rings. Both times I read this chapter it reminded me of that scene in Fellowship of the Ring where the hobbits are hiding under the tree roots with the Dark rider right on top of them. Poor Rand is listening to his father babble about how he isn't Rands real father and in the midst of this he has a Fade right on his tale. His ...

The Green Man looks at Rand and is surprised to see him wearing a sword. We know he looks like an Aiel and we also find out in book 4 that they WILL NOT carry a sword. Mat defending the Aes Sedai as he does here won’t last very long…That RJ was a clever fellow.
