Here's another origin for a Jordan element. The Hunt for the Horn of Valere that takes place in Illian is adopted from Norse mythology called the Wild Hunt. The dead would ride great clouds in the sky as they charged forth, creating thunderstorms. What does the Horn of Valere do? It brings back the Hundred Companions, those who have been dead for three thousand years. Here's a Wikipedia article on it:

This chapter contained one of the most memorable moments for me--it must have, it's been about 15 years since I read this book and I still remember it. The crucifiction of the Myrddraal. Jordan's description is supreme here; he even describes the scuff marks on the door left there by the Fade's dying kicks. If anyone needs a reminder as to why you don't mess with Padan Fain, this is it. Imagine the physicality of the whole scene. Fain disarms and seizes the Myrddraal with one hand, and with the ...

This is exactly why Robert Jordan sucks you in. The novel begins with a meeting between darkfriends and Ishamael. Right off the bat we're shown that darkfriends can come from any land or be any social rank. Nobility and perhaps royalty are represented. We're also shown that Ishamael is alive, though horribly wounded. "The man named Bors" is a Questioner for the Children of the Light but I cannot remember if he's important to the story. Does he ever show up again?

The most interesting aspect of this chapter is Padan Fain. Fain references Mordeth more than once in a seemingly mad rant. This really should be attached to our awesome conversation regarding Padan Fain HERE. I think this really does solidify Ryan's claim that Mordeth has possessed Fain. See, this is why a re-read is important!

Tam al'Thor's backstory is given in brief. Moiraine speaks to the Amyrlin, Siuan Sanche, concerning Rand's father. Rand is also in attendance in a very formal first meeting with the Amyrlin. Tam earned the title of Blademaster after leaving the Two Rivers as a boy. He joined the army of Illian and fought in a couple of wars, eventually earning the rank of Second Captain of the Companions (whatever they were). So, it's interesting to note that Tam earned the balde, rather than came across it. ...

I've started a new web site devoted to the academic study of The Wheel of Time. I've written a couple of essays to start off. The first is a treatise on the pronunciation of certain words, such as "saidin," "saidar," and "Gaidin." Take a look: The Academic Wheel of Time.

Other than the philological interests this chapter title brings to mind, Rand encounters the mightiest sa’angreal here for the first time. (While we’re at pronunciations, “angreal” ...

Rand, Loial, Hurin, and Selene camp out in Kinslayer’s Dagger. Hurin sees Fain’s fire and Rand and Loial sneak in to retrieve the Horn and the dagger from Shadar Logoth. Rand slays four Trollocs. RJ’s use of descriptive language in order to name the sword forms takes the place of an actual description of the fight. This is a fantastic method for a writer to employ—the poetry of the names for each sword form creates the imagery, not the action itself. I wonder if RJ had any formal martial ...

BTW, the portal stone world is messed up. Loial iterates the fact that the portal stones place you in worlds that might have been. He then states that the world their in is a world in which the Trollocs have won. This is in fact EXACTLY what the Dark One is trying to do with the Last Battle--transform the world into his own image. One in which man no longer lives.
When doing a re-read, it's easy to point out all the times the characters first do something they make a habit of doing later on in the series-- actions that were once difficult or novel that have become nearly mundane. This chapter marks a pretty momentous occassion as such. For the first time, Rand realizes that the filthy light inside of the void is actually saidin. It's like a baby who first realizes the function of their legs. It was present before but Rand just didn't know what it was. ...

In the end of The Great Hunt, Where Egwene is freed from the Damane by Nynaeve, Min and Elayne. Renna Egwene's sul'dam walks in. Egwene collars her and takes a hold of the leash. She begins toturing Renna, as punishment for all the hurtful things she did to Egwene. Nynaeve stogs Egwene and she breaks down in tears.

Elayne says "Rand would kill someone who did a thing like that."

Nynaeve's response is "Men often mistake revenge and killing for justice."

Well I started this book over a week ago. Haven't had much time to read, let alone post with recent events, but now I am taking some time for me. I can tell this series is going to be confusing. So I will try to be better at posting. This way you all can tell me what is going on. Firstly, what is the deal with Padden Fain. Is he cured, will he be cured, and if he isn't it seems pretty foolish of Egwene to go visit him. Don't you agree? This lunatic could be feeding off of her. Especially considering ...

So I was reading and it hit me that the void is much like the relaxing and channeling processes the Aes Sedai use. It is very apparent in Chapter 11 and 12. Chapter 11 Rand finally falls asleep with the void, chapter 12 Egwene begins her classes by focussing on the bud. There are too many similarities to list here.

It also appears to me that Rand disapears into the void. Has anyone else noticed this? There is some major connection between the Void, Rand and the One Power. In the end of ...

In this chapter Moraine sees out of the corner of her eye Egwene sneaking Rand into the women's apartments. Below is the actual quote from the book.

"From the corner of her eye, Moiraine saw Egwene, far down the side hall, disappearing hurriedly around a corner. A stooped shape in a leather jerkin, head down and arms loaded with bundles, shambled at her heels. Moiraine permitted herself a small smile, quickly masked. If the girl shows as much initiative in Tar Valon, she thought wryly, ...
