Ch. 8: The Dragon Reborn **SPOILERS**

Tam al'Thor's backstory is given in brief. Moiraine speaks to the Amyrlin, Siuan Sanche, concerning Rand's father. Rand is also in attendance in a very formal first meeting with the Amyrlin. Tam earned the title of Blademaster after leaving the Two Rivers as a boy. He joined the army of Illian and fought in a couple of wars, eventually earning the rank of Second Captain of the Companions (whatever they were). So, it's interesting to note that Tam earned the balde, rather than came across it. It would be spectacular to see a Rand v. Tam sword fight, just so Rand could show his father what he's learned. It would be kind of tough now though, since Rand lost his sword hand and he has to relearn everything. However, it's still a neat idea.

Of other import here is Lan's social education of Rand. He informs Rand how to speak to the Amyrlin and Rand accepts--and follows--most of the etiquette. This shows a different side of Lan, I believe. Lan is not completely wedded to the Tower even though he's a Warder. He's a man who understands Rand's plight; and as such he was willing to help the best way that he can. Lan obviously considers Rand his pupil, and as such he's willing to teach Rand more than sword forms. Now that's a cool teacher!
